Larsen Cage Trap

A Larsen trap is the established method used by gamekeepers, farmers, and conservation managers to control corvids during the breeding season, principally magpies and carrion crows. It works on the territorial instincts of these birds: a call (decoy) bird is housed in one compartment, and intruding territory holders enter the catch compartment to confront it, where a sprung perch and door secures them inside.

Important: legal use in the UK

Larsen traps can only be used under a current general licence issued by the relevant authority for your country. In England this is Natural England (general licences GL01, GL02, or GL03 depending on purpose, together with the standard trapping conditions in GL33), in Wales Natural Resources Wales, in Scotland NatureScot, and in Northern Ireland DAERA. From 1 January 2026 the England licences are issued annually rather than every two years, so the conditions need checking each year.

The general licences come with strict welfare requirements that you, as the trap operator, are legally responsible for. In summary, you must:

• Inspect the trap in person at least once every 24 hours
• Provide your decoy bird with suitable food, fresh water, adequate shelter from sun and rain, and a perch at all times
• From 2026, register your decoy bird on the GB Poultry Register
• Release any non target species (including any protected species) unharmed immediately
• Render the trap incapable of catching any bird when it is not in use, by removing access doors or padlocking it shut
• Be able to identify yourself as the operator if challenged
