The most common species of ant found in the UK is the BLACK ANT ( Lasius niger ). These ants form nests in gardens and under the foundations of buildings and although they are not a major pest in houses or buildings, they can become so when their population grows.

Black ants live in colonies consisting of many worker ants and one Queen ant. The worker ants are dark brown or black in colour and are between 3mm and 5mm in length. The Queen ant is much larger, being up to 12mm long, but she is not often seen as she remains in the nest with only the worker ants being found foraging around for food ready to take back to feed the nests ant colony.

When ants come indoors through the foundations of houses, they may become a problem in the summer when they are searching for food and they are often found in kitchens which normally have plentiful supplies of food debris. These same ants during humid summer days can grow wings when they then become 'flying ants', this being necessary for them to breed and form new ant colonies.

Although ants are not known for carrying disease, they can contaminate a wide variety of foods and can become a major nuisance indoors.

Pharaoh Ants can also be found in homes but these insects are usually associated with larger buildings such as blocks of flats or office blocks. These structures have heating ducts connecting through the buildings which are ideal as pharaoh ants need high temperatures to live and breed. Pharaoh ants are smaller than black ants at about 2mm in length and they are a yellow-brown colour with a darker head and abdomen
